Music Newsletter: January 2023

Happy New Year!

Music at Foothills is kicking the year off with a pickup choir this Saturday! We’ll be learning protest music of the civil rights era to sing for our Service on MLK Jr. Day Weekend––this event is open to everyone. Choir rehearsals will also be resuming next Wednesday, January 18. Later in the month, you’re invited to a contemplative vespers service that will be full of meditative music. Read on for more information about what’s coming up!

MLK Jr. Day Pick up Choir
Rehearsal on Saturday, 1/14, from 1:00 to 3:00pm
Gather on Sunday 1/15 at 7:30am to sing for services
Sign up at foothillsuu.org/mlkchoir.

You can lift your voice and sing in the MLK Jr. Day Pick-up Choir! Participants will attend a single rehearsal on the afternoon of Saturday 1/14 to learn protest songs from the civil rights movement to the modern day, which will be performed during services on Sunday, 1/15.

All are welcome—no musical experience is required! This opportunity is open to anyone who wants to explore the history of the music which was an important part of the civil rights movement, and how the legacy of those songs lives on today.

The rehearsal will take place in the sanctuary on Saturday, 1/14 from 1 to 3 p.m. in the sanctuary. Warmups before the service on Sunday, 1/15 begin at 7:30 a.m. Participants are asked to sing for both Sunday service times, if possible. Please contact benjamin@foothillsuu.org for more information.

Choir Rehearsals Resume
Wednesdays from 6:30 pm to 8:00 beginning 1/18
(Please note the changed start date)

Returning from a holiday break, the Foothills Choir will resume rehearsals next Wednesday! The choir is open to everyone high-school-aged and older who wants to sing in a supportive community of curious and creative individuals––no prior musical experience is required. This is a great time to jump in, as we will begin working on new music for the spring semester. You can sign up here, or contact benjamin@foothillsuu.org for more information.

January Vespers Service
Tuesday, 1/24 at 6:30
Come early to learn the songs at 5:45

We had such a positive response from the vespers services in November and December that we’ll continue them in 2023! You’re invited to a candlelit service of silence, music, and meditation on Tuesday 1/24 at 6:30 pm. Anyone interested is also invited to join Benjamin before the service to practice the songs that will be sung during the service. We will learn vocal harmonies that will make the musical meditations even more beautiful.

Mark Your Calendars: Music Sunday in May!
Sunday, 5/14

On Sunday, May 14, Foothills will hold our annual Music Sunday––a worship service consisting entirely of musical offerings from and for the Foothills community. But we can’t put on this service without your help! All musically-inclined Foothills members (like you!) are invited to consider what music you could offer on Music Sunday. Individuals or groups are invited to participate. Our Music Director is happy to help with musical selection and preparation, so don’t hesitate to reach out if you sing, play an instrument, or dance! Contact benjamin@foothillsuu.org if you are interested in contributing to Music Sunday, or for additional information.
