Pausing In-Person Church: An Updated Plan for COVID-19 Safety

You may have seen the “We Believe” signs across Fort Collins. What you may not know is that many of them came from Foothills Unitarian, and we stand by what those signs say even when it means making difficult choices.

Believing science is real means paying attention to data even when it’s inconvenient, and the COVID-19 data for Larimer County is clear.

Daily case rates are nearly double our previous high in Larimer County, and the COVID Act Now level has reached Severe Risk (the highest level). We know cases are undercounted due to in-home tests, and we also understand that the post-New Years Eve surge and post-return-to-school surge are yet to come.

We have a continued responsibility to our staff, to our volunteers, and to our whole community – especially our taxed medical providers – to do what we can to reduce this surge as much as possible.

As a result, we are briefly pausing our in-person options until at least January 23rd. We will re-evaluate the risk no later than January 17th to determine if this need be extended further. This includes in-person services, all small groups, team meetings, Our Whole Lives, and office hours.

If you are part of a small group, team, or program that meets in person, your group leader will be in touch about plans to move online.

We are glad to offer more robust online options over the next few weeks, including an option for our 10 am service that still includes separate time for kids and adults. Learn more about our online options below, and stay tuned for information about online small groups coming soon.

Join us at 9 am on Zoom for the OG online Sunday service, in what continues to be an innovative and interactive experience that offers the real-time responsiveness and engagement of in-person services from the comfort of your own home.

Even though we’re pausing in person, we aren’t pausing our need for personalized connection and community.  We hope you’ll join us for the same friendships and belonging we have been loving at our 10 am service in a safe, online format.  We will all start together for a 15-minute chalice lighting and ritual, then we will go to separate zoom spaces for adult and kid time.

Adult time will include a spiritual practice, a short sermon, and small group conversations.

Kid time will include fun, games, and connection around our theme.

*If your kids are joining us, you will need two devices (computer, tablet, or phone). Plan to start together on the device that your kids will use, and then adults will move to a different zoom room for the adult time on a second device. We will walk you through each step during the service.

You can also catch a re-broadcast of our Sunday service at 11 am (or watch anytime after) on our website, on a smart TV, or on Facebook Live.

We are truly awed by your generosity, compassion, and adaptability over the past two years. We know that we would all very much appreciate stopping the changes, and yet we can also be proud of our capacity to pivot and still find the same meaning and connection – all made possible because we stay connected to all those values listed on our yard signs. Thank you for all the ways you keep showing up, even when it’s hard, or frustrating, or not what you would prefer. Thank you for helping to keep our community going strong through it all.
