Ceasefire Colorado – Guns, Public Health and Mental Illness

April 22 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

You are invited to attend and learn about Gun Violence Restraining Orders, a new tool to reduce gun violence. Colorado Ceasefire Outreach is holding meetings throughout our State to present the research evidence supporting the need for new avenues to protect people from self-inflicted and other inflicted injuries and death. While our society has approaches for caring for the seriously mentally ill and convicted criminals, it does not now provide appropriate responses and care for people who are at great risk for engaging in violence due to temporary crises. We are seeking to engage Colorado citizens, mental health advocates, legislators, local law enforcements, health care providers, judges and district attorneys, and activists in gun violence prevention.
During this 2-hour meeting we cover the following.
Mental Illness is NOT a good predictor of gun violence. Only 4% of other-directed gun violence incidents are linked with mental illness.
However, 80% of gun deaths in Colorado are suicides (self-directed gun violence) and half of suicides can be linked to mental illness.
Factors that predict other-directed gun violence include: history of violence including violent misdemeanor crimes, domestic violence, drug and alcohol abuse, and personal crises such as job loss, marital problems, PTSD, etc
Gun Violence Restraining Order – a legal tool that can be used to temporarily remove guns from persons experiencing life crises that may lead to other-directed or self-directed gun violence. This is a mechanism to enable family members, intimate partners, law enforcement, and health care providers to petition the court to temporarily prohibit an individual in crisis from purchasing or possessing firearms.

Evidence for the effectiveness of Gun Violence Restraining Orders.
